Band Representative Program

The Band Representative Program at Musk-kosiminiziibing ensures that the rights, interests, and cultural identity of our children, youth, and families are protected when involved with Child and Family Services. Guided by our inherent right to care for our children, the Band Representative provides advocacy, guidance, and direct support to families.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Band Representative:

  • Supports members who are involved or may become involved with Child and Family Service agencies
  • Builds and maintains working relationships with Child and Family Service agencies to ensure services reflect the cultural, geographic, and historical realities of Musk-kosiminiziibing families
  • Acts as a liaison between Musk-kosiminiziibing and external child welfare agencies
  • Represents and advocates for the Nation’s interests in child protection proceedings and hearings, including preparing and filing court documentation and engaging legal counsel when required
  • Ensures families understand their rights and responsibilities within the child welfare system
  • Assists families in accessing community resources and maintaining strong cultural, family, and community connections
  • Participates in case conferences, care planning, and reunification efforts to support children remaining with or returning to their families
  • Facilitates repatriation and reunification of children and youth in care with their families and First Nation
  • Develops and administers the Band Representative Program, including budgets, workplans, proposals, and reporting requirements
  • Upholds and strengthens the Nation’s rights under provincial, territorial, and federal child and family service laws

Through advocacy, collaboration with Elders and service providers, and consistent communication with leadership, the Band Representative Program works to keep children connected to their families, culture, and community – ensuring decisions are made in the collective best interests of Musk-kosiminiziibing’s children, now and for future generations.
