Mentored Work Experience Program

FNIYES Mentored Work Experience Program

The First Nations and Inuit Youth Employment Strategy (FNIYES) is a national Indigenous youth employment initiative administered by Indigenous Services Canada that supports First Nations and Inuit youth to gain work experience, develop job‑ready skills, and explore career opportunities.

The Mentored Work Experience Program under FNIYES is designed to support youth who may be unemployed, underemployed, or not currently enrolled in school by providing paid, structured work placements combined with ongoing guidance and mentorship. Through this program, participants receive hands‑on experience in real work settings, strengthening their employability skills such as communication, problem‑solving, teamwork, and professionalism while gaining confidence and insight into potential career paths.

Key Features:

  • Target Group: First Nations and Inuit youth, typically between the ages of 15 to 30 who are legally entitled to work in Canada and meet program eligibility criteria.
  • Mentored Placements: Work experiences are paired with mentorship and support to help youth connect their work tasks to broader career goals and personal development.
  • Skill Development: Youth gain valuable workplace skills that enhance future employability and help reduce barriers to long‑term employment.
  • Employability Focus: The program aims to build real experience, expand career awareness, and support successful transitions into the labour market or further education.

FNIYES helps communities, organizations, and employers host these mentored placements by providing wage subsidies and resources to support quality youth internships. This initiative not only benefits individual participants but also contributes to community economic development and Indigenous youth workforce participation.
