We are pleased to announce the introduction of Post-Majority Support Services (PMSS), a program designed to support eligible First Nations youth and young adults as they transition from care to independent adulthood. These services are intended to help young people build healthy, successful, and culturally connected futures.
Who Can Access Post-Majority Support Services?
Youth and young adults may be eligible if they:
- Are currently in care and approaching the age of majority;
- Were in care when they reached the age of majority;
- Left care through a voluntary care arrangement before reaching the age of majority;
- Were ordinarily resident on reserve at the time they entered care, are currently residing on reserve, or are actively taking steps to return to their home community; and
- Are under 26 years of age.
What Supports Are Available?
Services are individualized and based on each young person’s self-identified needs, goals, and best interests.
Education, Training & Employment
- Educational planning and mentorship
- Tutoring and career counselling
- Training, certifications, and professional development
- Assistance with school-related expenses
- Technology required for education (such as laptops)
- Career and employment readiness supports
Housing & Financial Supports
- Budgeting and financial literacy
- Assistance obtaining identification documents
- Driver’s education and licensing support
- Transitional housing and rent assistance
- Moving expenses
- Household setup and life-skills training
- Employment-related clothing and essentials
Health & Wellness Supports
- Access to health and wellness services
- Mental health and counselling supports
- Healthy relationship education
- Parenting supports for young parents
- Nutrition and healthy living programs
- Physical activity and wellness opportunities
Culture, Language & Community Connection
- Reconnection with family, community, and culture
- Land-based wellness activities
- Cultural teachings, ceremonies, and youth groups
- Language learning opportunities
- Access to Elders and Knowledge Keepers
- Mentorship and peer support programs
How to Apply
Individuals interested in accessing Post-Majority Support Services are encouraged to contact the Post-Majority Support Service Worker to complete an intake and discuss their goals and support needs. An intake meeting will help identify appropriate services and develop a personalized support plan.
