Emergency Assistance Program

The Emergency Assistance Program (EAP) provides temporary, compassionate, and culturally grounded financial support to eligible community members facing critical or unexpected hardships. This guideline outlines eligibility, approved situations, procedures, and responsibilities.

Applicants must:
– Be a registered member of Big Grassy River First Nation.
– Provide proof of emergency or critical need.
– Demonstrate financial need and lack of access to other supports (e.g., government or
insurance programs).
– Reside on-reserve or off-reserve, within Canada.
– Filled out and submitted Emergency Assistance Fund Request Form.

ELIGIBLE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

The following categories are eligible for support, subject to verification:
1. Funeral-Related Travel (Immediate Family Only)
– Travel costs for attending funerals of immediate family (as traditionally defined).
– May include airfare, bus fare, gas reimbursement, and limited overnight
accommodations.
– Must provide proof of death (e.g., obituary, funeral notice).

2. Emergency Food Assistance
– Grocery vouchers or hampers during crises such as: sudden loss of income, natural disaster; fire or evacuation

3. Medical Emergency Travel
– Assistance with travel costs related to a medical emergency requiring treatment outside
the home community.

4. House Fire or Natural Disaster
– Emergency clothing, food, shelter, and household replacement assistance for members
whose homes are damaged or destroyed.
– Must be supported by a fire report, emergency services notice, or landlord statement.

5. Domestic Violence and Safety Relocation
– Temporary shelter, transport, or basic necessities for members fleeing abuse.
– Requires referral from a health worker, law enforcement, or social services.

6. Evacuation Support
– Lodging, food, or transport in the case of community-wide evacuations due to floods,
fires, or other environmental hazards.
– Must align with broader emergency response plans.
