Youth Worker
As part of the Community Care team, you will be actively supporting youth, both in and out of care and on and off the First Nation, to achieve their individual goals and provide them assistance and support with daily activities. You will be working a variety of shifts (day, evening or overnight) some after-hours work may be required to meet the needs of our youth dependent on planned activities. This is a contract term position.
The role of the Youth Worker is based on establishing a trusting relationship with families and individuals in order to help and to support them and as such will not undertake protection responsibilities within the team however still has a duty to report.
Primary Qualifications:
A Social Services diploma with related experience may be considered. A minimum two-year Native Child and Family Services is preferred.
Direct experience with at-risk youth for a minimum of 2 years and;
Experience in harm reduction, safety planning and crisis intervention and;
Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively and negotiate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team of service providers
Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of the youth community.
Ability to understand or speak Ojibway would be considered an asset;
Knowledge of at-risk youth-related issues, such as addictions, sexual orientation/identity, peer/social culture, human development, violence, teen pregnancy, gangs, etc.;
Knowledge of case management systems, reporting procedures and responsibilities and the ability to work within those systems;
Effective written and oral communication skills, problem solving, advocacy and assessment skills;
Ability to manage crisis and adverse situations with staff, youth and families;
Knowledge and understanding of the Child and Family Services Act, the Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation;
Non-violent crisis intervention (CPI), suicide intervention (ASIST), standard first aid or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired.
Ability to work flexible hours as determined by the Supervisor in relation to service delivery requirements;
Must possess a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and have access to a personal vehicle;
The Youth worker will be required to complete training with Weechi-it-te-win Family Services prior to commencement of employment.
Salary: Commensurate with experience. PFT 6-month probationary period.
This position is full time with a 6-month probationary period. POSITION AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY!
